The Udaipur to Chittorgarh route is hard to mess up. Still, a few tips for the Udaipur to Chittorgarh road trip:

• Vijay Stambh, the Tower of Victory. Rana Kumbha built it in 1448. Nine storeys, 37 metres. You've seen it on postcards. Up close, the carving is crazy detailed.
• Kirti Stambh, the Tower of Fame. Older, 12th century, a Jain tower for Adinath. Smaller. Prettier, if you ask me.
• Rana Kumbha Palace. Mostly ruins now. But big history. Linked to Rani Padmini and Meera Bai. Maharana Udai Singh, who founded Udaipur, was born here.
• Padmini Palace. Next to a lotus pond. Tied to the legend of Rani Padmini and Alauddin Khilji.
• Meera Temple and Kumbha Shyam Temple. Linked to the poet-saint Meera Bai. Usually peaceful.
• Kalika Mata Temple. Started as a Sun temple. Later dedicated to Goddess Kali.
• Gaumukh Reservoir. A sacred tank fed by a spring coming out of a cow-mouth shaped rock. Shady. Good place to sit.
• Jauhar Kund and Samadhishvara Temple. The heavy part. Take a few quiet minutes here.
• Fateh Prakash Palace Museum. Royal stuff, sculptures, old weapons.
• Light and Sound Show. Evenings, seasonal. Only if you're staying late.

Time to Allot: Chittorgarh Day Trip from Udaipur

This is how I usually plan the day:

• 7:30 AM, leave Udaipur. Own car or taxi.
• 9:00 AM, breakfast near Fatehnagar.
• 10:00 AM, into the fort. Vijay Stambh, Kirti Stambh, Samadhishvara Temple.
• 11:30 AM, Rana Kumbha Palace, Meera Temple, Kumbha Shyam Temple.
• 1:00 PM, lunch inside or near the fort.
• 2:00 PM, Padmini Palace, Kalika Mata Temple, Gaumukh Reservoir.
• 3:30 PM, the museum.
• 4:30 PM, head home. You'll be in Udaipur by 7.

Best Time to Visit Chittorgarh

• October to February. Best time for an Udaipur to Chittorgarh road trip. Cool enough to be outside all day.
• March has the Jauhar Mela. Crowded. Colourful. Worth it if you like that sort of thing.
• April to June? 40 degrees plus. Go early. Done by 1.
• Monsoon, July to September. The fort goes green and the photos look amazing. Some paths get slippery though. Wear proper shoes.
